Summer Time and Identity Theft

It is summer time, the children are out of school, and you have vacation time. If you harsh winter with plenty of cold and snow, you are going to want to go somewhere it is sunny and hot. The place that fits the description is the beach, or at least a hotel with a great swimming pool.

When you book your hotel for the summer, you probably did it back in the spring because these places fill up fast. With so many people going in and out of the hotel the housekeepers do not bother trying to place a face and a room number together. When they clean the rooms, there are usually several housekeepers per floor and each are assigned a certain number of rooms.

With the cleaning cars being so big and bulky, the housekeepers leave them in the hall, and go back and forth to get what they need. In addition, they leave the door to the room open to make it easier on them. At any given moment, an identity thief could just walk into an open room like it was their room and pretend to be looking for something they forgot. What they are really doing is looking for something with your personal information on it.

The way to prevent your room from becoming a place where just anyone can walk in and look through your stuff, you can let the housekeeping staff know that you will not need their services. What they do daily is give you fresh towels, vacuum the floor, take out the trash, leave more soap, and make the beds. You are on vacation so it does not matter if the bed is made or the floor is vacuumed. The housekeeping staff does not change the sheets every day, just usually when the people check out.

You can call down and ask for fresh towels at the end of the day and fresh soap if you need to, or you can bring your own soap and toilet paper. When you get ready to leave for the day, turn the television on and the volume up a little bit, then hang the “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door. By doing this, you can ensure that the housekeeping staff will not enter the room.

If you would like them to clean your room, make sure that you will be there when they do it.
